The main functions of the Mines & Geology Department are :
  • To regulate and administer the business of mines and minerals
  • Granting Mineral Concessions
  • Collecting revenue through minerals
  • Development of Mines, establishment of mineral-based industries
  • Mineral Conservation and Mine closure

Chankya the greatest economist of (3rd century B.C) has declared that mineral resources are the states own treasure. The state must utilize, consume and conserve its treasure for the well being of its citizen. Jharkhand is reffered as Museum of Minerals. we have a variety of minerals from Uranium to Copper, Mica to Clays and all the minor minerals used in construction process.

To regulate and administer the business of mines and minerals, granting mineral concession, collecting revenue through minerals, development of mines, establishment of mineral based industries, mineral conservation and mine closure are the main functions of the Ministry of Mines & Geology.

There two directorates functioning under the Ministry i.e., Directorate of Mines and Geology. Jharkhand State Minreal Development Corporation has been established to undertake mining activities of low and marginal ones in fur-flung areas. The corporation also intends to take projects under the cover of joint venture.

The department regenerates its activities through eighteen District Mining Offices, located at all the important District Headquarters. The newly created districts wiil soon get District Mining Offices. District Mining Offices is headed by District / Assistant Mining Officer. They are assisted by Inspectors and Clerks. Each division is headed by Deputy Director of Mines. There are five divisions present. The District Mining Offices carry out its work through The Mines and Mineral (Department and Regulation) Act, 1957 and The Mineral Concession Rules,1960 for major minerals. For minor minerals, Jharkhand Minor Mineral Concession Rules, 2004 has been promulgated.
