As far as natural resources are
concerned, Jharkhand is a veritable cornucopia. The major portion of the
countrys Mica reserves, about one third of its coal (with a virtual monopoly on
coking coal) and copper ore reserves and about one fourth of its Iron ore
reserves are here. Bauxite, Graphite, Chromite, Kyanite, Limestone and many
other economic mineral reserves exists here. Mining of these minerals and
industries based upon them provide tremendous opportunities for investors.
The geographical position of Jharkhand
in India symbolizes position of heart and provides raw material to Steel plant /
Thermal power plant as major life line to neighboring states and other parts of
India. Coal will continue to be the major source of energy for the country in
the foreseeable future. There is going to be a great upsurge in the demand for
coal. Thus there is tremendous scope for the development of more collieries in
the state. The beneficiation of power grade coal is demanded not only by the
government regulations but by economic imperative also. This will necessitate
the setting up of washeries. Value adding industries like coal oven plants can
be set up here. As the transmission of power is cheaper than the transport of
coal, more and more pit-head based powerhouses are need of future.
Thus Jharkhand can be developed as the
power capital of the country. Industries based on the by-products of washeries,
coke ovens and power houses are another area for development. More Iron ore
mines can be opened and steel plants can be established. Plants to make a
special and a variety of iron and steel using different technologies can be set
up.
Limestone mines can be developed and
more cement plants can be opened. Mining of graphite, copper, mica etc. can be
further developed and industries based on them can be founded. Granite and other
precious and semi-precious ornamental stones offer yet another area for
development. These are only certain illustrations of what can be done in the
field of mines and mineral based industries.
Due to favorable geological set up of
Jharkhand state, the first integrated steel plant was set up in Jharkhand about
eighty years ago, that too in private sector which is stiil very competitive.
The strucks that have dominated the road transport sector over the past several
decades earned their reputation for quality when they were being manufactured
exclusively in this state.
