At present approximately 5 crore of words population are infected with HIV AIDS, out of which 1/10th of this population (approx. 50 lacs) are in India.

In India, no state is free from this severe disease. Jharkhand also have HIV Positive cases. Though Jharkhand is a low prevalence state, but due to migration and other reason, there is ample chance of spread of this dreaded disease. Now it is our responsibility to prevent spread of this dreaded disease AIDS.

   PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CONTROL

We should create awareness among the masses about ways to prevent & control the spread of this disease & to make AIDS free Jharkhand. Jharkhand State AIDS Control Society is fully Committed & is working towards their goal – AIDS Free  Jharkhand.

To provide safe & disease free blood & products, three new blood banks at MIG Medical College & Hospital, Sadar Hospital, Chaibasa & Hazaribagh were opened. Opening of blood banks at Sadar Hospital, Medninagar, Deogher, Dumka, Lohardaga & Garhwa by the end of this financial year is proposed. Till December, 2003, 66,304 units of safe blood were given to the beneficiaries.

The Jamshedpur Blood Bank which has been running very successfully has been requested to provide training and systems design to all other newly opened blood banks in the state.

Nine NGOs were selected to carry out targeted interventions for high risk group people.

Family health awareness campaign was observed from 7th June to 22nd June 2003. In this programme several cases of  STD and RTI were diagnosed and treated. Total number of cases treated were 52,531( 11.19%).

4 lac condoms were distributed free through Swasthaya Mela, Mahila Udyog Mela, Awareness Camps, World AIDS day, VCCTC & STD clinics.

School AIDS education programme is being started in classes 9th and 11th of  440 schools.

262 Doctors and 286 Paramedical Staffs have been trained.

Voluntary blood donation camps were arranged on 1st oct 2003 as World Blood Donation Day and in the occasion of world AIDS day on 1st Dec Workshops, rallies and other awareness programmes were done and posters, pamplets were distributed.
